The Rt Hon. Lord Plymouth,
The Colonial Office, S.W. 1.
Dear Lord Plymouth,
I have had a letter from my friend the Bishop of
Victoria (Hong Kong) in which he tells me that he has written
(1) to the Secretary of State with regard to the possibility of
a reprieve in the Nullah murder case. The subject is not one
on the merits of which it would be proper for me to express
any opinion and the information in the Bishop's letter is much
too slight for me to form any judgment at all. I write,
however, to let you know, in case the information may be of
any service, that I have known the Bishop intimately for many
years and that I regard him as having as good a knowledge of
the feelings and mentality of the Chinese as anyone that I
know in the Far East. He spent some years in China before he
was appointed Bishop of Victoria and showed that he had unusual
gifts in understanding the Chinese. He is also a person in
whose judgment in general I have much confidence.
This letter
is not an endorsement of any views that he may have expressed,
of which I am in complete ignorance, but merely to let you know
something about him if his letter comes to your attention.
I am,
Yours very sincerely,
84. Aa
